Ron Blazer, Superintendent of the Northport – East Northport UFSD, announced that because of ongoing environmental concerns, Northport Middle School will close for the remainder of the school year. Plans are in the works to relocated eight grade students to Northport High School, seventh grade students to East Northport Middle School, and the sixth grade classes will be split between Norwood Avenue and Bellerose Avenue Schools. Sad News …
Barbara Athanas, elementary teacher in Dickinson Avenu School for over 20 years, passed away on January 14 at the age of 76. Barbara is survived by her husband Andrew; her children Lauren, Neuse and Ryan; and two grandchildren.
Visitation was Thursday, January 16 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at The Brueggemann Funeral Home, 522 Larkfield Road, EastNorthport. After a funeral service at 8 p.m. the family invited people to share memories of Barbara.
Graveside service on Friday, January 17 ay 11:00 a.m. at Pinelawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the American Cancer Society online or by mail, 75 Davids Drive, Hauppauge, New York 11788
Northport Middle School Update
On January 9 over one hundred residents, staff members and retirees attended a meeting of the Northport – East Northport UFSD Board of Education to listen and respond to the report by the Board Subcommittee on Northport Middle School Soil Testing. John Kobel, retired Middleville/Northport Middle School teacher, spoke at length at the meeting, and prepared an update for the R-UTN membership.
