NYS Election Updates

The Presidential Primary in NY has been cancelled. The only people voting in NY on June 23 will be those who live in a district where there is a state or congressional primary.  They will be mailed absentee ballot applications or have the option of “in person” voting. So far, the school budget and school board elections have not been scheduled.  We will continue to keep are members posted as development unfold.

Meanwhile, you can still request an absentee ballot to have in the event that the rules for submitting them are subsequently amended for the general election in November.

Important!!

From New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli

Have Peace of Mind that Your Pension Benefits are Secure
Like all investors, the state’s pension fund has faced challenges this year. Fortunately, we’re well-funded and the benefits of public workers are secure. We want to assure the more than one million men and women who rely on the state pension fund for retirement security that we are well-positioned to weather the ongoing volatility. To our retirees, your pensions are safe and we will continue to pay your benefits as scheduled each and every month as promised. For some time, we’ve been making adjustments in expectation of a downturn in the economy. We’re actively managing through these difficult times and are confident the markets will ultimately recover

Know Your Retirement Benefits if You Get Sick
The unfortunate reality is that some public workers may become seriously ill or die from this virus. If tragedy befalls them before their retirement becomes effective their beneficiaries could lose out. I applaud Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order that waives the standard waiting period after filing for service retirement benefits to ensure their families will get the benefits meant for them. I want to make sure that we’re fulfilling our promises to public workers.

Stay safe and make your vote count in the NYS primaries …

Governor Cuomo just announce that all New York State registered voters will be mailed applications to request for Absentee Ballots for the upcoming June primaries.

The NY State Constitution does not currently allow voting by mail. Absentee balloting has always been an option for those who will be out of state during an election or have a medical condition. In early April the Governor issued the following executive order allowing ALL voters to request absentee ballots by checking “temporary illness or physical disability” as the reason for the request.

**Pursuant to Executive Order 202.15 issued April 9, 2020, voters may request and vote via an absentee ballot for any election held on or before June 23, 2020 due to the potential to contract the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). To request an absentee ballot, voters may fill out an absentee ballot application and check “temporary illness or physical disability” as the reason they are requesting an absentee ballot.

Once the Governor signs the new executive order, applications for absentee ballots will be mailed to all registered voters. Watch your mail for the application. Once you received it must be filled out and returned to your county Board of Elections.

Once you receive the actual absentee ballot you can always change your mind. Absentee ballots must be post marked the day before the election. If you think you may want to vote in person, hold on to the ballot – the deadline for mailing the ballot is June 22.

Giving Back to Our Community

During this very difficult time many families are in need of help. All around the country neighborhood food banks are working overtime to help their communities. In Northport the Food Pantry run by the Ecumenical Lay Council is giving out gift cards to IGA and Stop and Shop. In East Northport the Society of Saint Vincent Di Paul is giving out bags of food at the curb, and when food runs out they are also distributing gift cards. The R-UTN has made generous contributions to both organizations.
