Richard “Duke” Appiarius, husband of Patricia, retired Dickinson Avenue Special Ed Teacher, father of Deirdre Levine, retired Pulaski Road School Grade 2 Teacher, and Maureen Appiarius, former Interim Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, passed away on January 28 at the age of 89.

Pat and Duke were married for 65 years, and in retirement divided their time between their homes in Huntington Station and Marco Island, Florida. Duke served in the United States Air Force and was a FDNY Ladder 4 firefighter.

Visitation Sunday, February 2, 3:00 – 8:00 p.m at the M A Connell Funeral Home in Huntington Station. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations made to, Tunnel to Towers Foundation, t2t.org, in Richard’s name.

William Sequin, Northport High School English teacher, passed away in New Hartford, CT, on November 26, 2024 at the age of 81. Bill is survived by his long time partner, Jim Grande and a cousin, Jan White.

Originally from Utica, NY, Bill, as he was know to all, graduated from Utica College and earned his Masters Degree from Stony Brook University. He was a devoted teacher who tutored students for the SAT exams, and had a great love for musical theater and the arts.

He was laid to rest at Holy Trinity Mausoleum.

John DeMartini, Northport PE teacher and coach for over 57 years, passed away on January 20. He is survived by his sister and her husband, Lynn and Stephen McDonald; nephew and his wife, Justin and Erica McDonald, and two nieces.

Known to students and colleagues as “DeMar,” John DeMartini leaves behind a legacy at Northport High School. He was the head coach of the Northport Tigers baseball team for over two decades. In September 2021 the Northport High School baseball field was renamed the “John DeMartini Baseball Field” in his honor.

A wake will be held at Chapey’s Funeral Home in East Islip on Sunday, January 26, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Kitty Zenkus, retired Northport High School clerical for 32 years, passed away on January 10th, at the age of 92. Kitty was predeceased by her husband John and is survived by her sons John and Anthony. Kitty was an important member of the high school clerical team, and for years she was the person who made sure student schedules work!

A funeral mass was held for Kitty at St. Phillip of Neri Church, followed by burial at the St. Phillip of Neri Cemetery in East Northport. Her family has asked that donations in Kitty’s name be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
