A recent apartment fire on Larkfield Road in East Northport left several families in our school district homeless and in need. The UTN is sponsoring a fund raiser in support of these families.

NHS Freshman Seriously Injured …
Miles Lerner, Incoming Northport High School Freshman, was on his way to cross country practice on Tuesday morning, September 4, when his was hit by a car on Laurel Hill Road and severely injured. Miles was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he remains in the pediatric intensive care unit with multiple injuries, including traumatic brain injuries. According to Newsday, the driver of the car was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended registration and uninsured vehicle.

Middleville / Northport Middle Update
Anyone who ever worked or attended school at the Middleville Road building are urged to get tested for heavy metal poisoning. A group of parents have formed a Facebook Group, (K)oncerned Parents, to share information, comments and sources about Middleville, themselves, their sick children, what they have tried to do and how they have been treated by the Northport district and the Board of Ed. The K stands for K wing which has been closed since June of 2017. The parent in charge of the Facebook page is Denise Curci Schwartz. Anyone asking to be a friend should either state that they worked in the building or mention R-UTN member John Kobel (his posts show up as Phyllis Kobel).
A petition has been started by the (K)oncerned Parents urging the closing of Northport Middel School. They are asking all concererned community members to visit the Change.org petition page and add their name.
Support Northport School in the LIPA Dispute
As most of you know, LIPA and National Grid, owners of the Northport Power Plant, are trying to reduce the assessment on the plant by 90%. If they succeed our school district will be adversely affected and property taxes will rise. A decision regarding the issue, which has been in litigation since 2010, is expected very soon.
The district is requesting that Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature immediately intervene and direct LIPA to agree to a reasonable and equitable settlement proposal. Dr. Banzer, Superintendent of schools, has prepared letters, to be sent enmass, to the Governor and our legislators in Albany. The R-UTN joins the district in asking all local residents to print out and sign these letters, and return them to the welcome desk at any of the district schools. The district will send them in bulk to each party to make sure they know how many people in the district are very concerned about the LIPA suit and the litigation.

For members in the Patchogue area – Applebee’s, 499 North service Road, Patchogue (Sunrise Highway), is hosting a fund raiser for the PATCHOGUE FAMILY YMCA, on Sunday April 22nd from 8 am-10 am.
$10 breakfast includes pancakes, sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs and coffee or tea. Proceeds go to support the YMCA summer children’s programs. Come and have a good breakfast and support a good cause – open to all.
