Sad News

Richard (Dick) Willets, retired PE teachers and coach, passed away on August 5 at the age of 88. Dick taught at Northport High School and coached both basketball and tennis. In retirement he became a Certified Tennis Pro and worked for many years as a tennis instructor. Dick is survived by his wife Janice, son Robert, daughters Patty and Peggy, three grandchildren and his sister Suzanne.

Visitation at Nolan’s Funeral Home on Thursday, August 10, 2:00-5:00 & 7:00 -9:00 p.m. Funeral Mass the next morning at 11:00 a.m. at Philip Neri Church in Northport, followed by burial at the Parish Cemetery.

Being Good Neighbors

During these days of high inflation many families in our community are in need of a helping hand. On behalf of our membership, the R-UTN donated $500 to each of the food pantries sponsored by the Ecumenical Lay Council of Northport – East Northport and the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Anthony’s Parish Outreach in East Northport.

R-UTN Scholarship for UTN Member Graduating Seniors

In addition to awarding scholarships to Northport High School graduating seniors, the R-UTN gives scholarships of $500 each to deserving children of UTN members. This year six scholarships were awarded, three of them to grandchildren of R-UTN members.

Jack Bisson’s mother Jen is an Ocean Avenue kindergarten teacher and he is the grandson of R-UTN member Nancy Armbruster.

Declan Motherway’s mother Kelly is an ENMS fifth grade teacher and grandson of the late
R-UTN member Cliff Bishop.

Erin Scheidt’s father Mark is an ENMS fifth grade teacher.

Lily Tener’s father Alan is an Elementary Counselor at Norwood Avenue.

Emme Terranova’s mother Michele teaches fifth grade at NMS and her grandmother is R-UTN member Patti Terranova.

Emily Vitevitch’s mother Kathleen teaches music at ENMS.

2022 R-UTN Memorial Scholarships

Each year, thanks to the generosity of our membership, the R-UTN awards scholarships to Northport High School graduating seniors. This year we awarded three, $2,000 scholarships.

Kailey Maloney and her first and second grade teacher, Jen Vogler Caruso “who made a difference.”

The Irene Eckert Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Kailey Maloney. Irene, who passed away last July, was a NHS Social Studies teacher and long-time member of the R-UTN Executive Board. The the recipient of this scholarship is interested in going into the field of civics or social studies education. Kailey plans to major in education at the University of Scranton.

The Hank Kasven Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Olivia DeFeo. Hank was a R-UTN Executive Board member, served as a UTN building rep, and taught middle and high school science. He passed away in May 2021, and the scholarship in his name was awarde to a student planning to go into a field of science or science education.

The R-UTN Memorial Scholarship, in memory of the R-UTN members who died in the past year, is awarded each year to a student seeking a career in education. This year’s recipient is Isabella Ingraldi.
